MARKET DAY 12-4-09

Friday was a day filled with hope for many!! Unpacking those boxes and seeing all the amazing donations filled my heart with hope that we could reach lots of people and provide them with the help they needed. Shopping in the market provided the women who we purchased from hope for the future as they sold us much of their food supplies and answering the prayers they say each day to feed their children. The food bought also provides hope to those who receive it as it will nourish their bodies and fill their souls knowing someone some where cares about them. Hope comes in many places even the tiniest ones they we may not even imagine. Simply making a purchase can provide hope to those we buy from. Whether that hope comes from the wages earned to buy food for their children, to pay for an education or to keep a roof over their heads the hope can be seen in their eyes. It's wonderful feeling to know buying food is having such an impact on so many lives. I could hardly wait until the next day to see the smiles those food baskets would bring. To see how much a simple gesture of giving a small amount of food to someone would bring such a huge smile to their faces. A warmth in their soul is known and felt by all when you watch that glimmer of hope appear as that smiles spreads across their face. It's a feeling that cannot be described and it's one I am so blessed to have been able to experience! I wish each of you could experience it because it's something you simply would NEVER forget!

ARRIVAL DAY 12-3-09

We arrived in Guatemala after a fairly smooth flight and the kids were ready to stretch their legs for sure. We walked around Hiper Piaz in Guatemala City buying the things we needed that we knew would be hard to find once we were in Panajachel. After all the supplies were bought and loaded we headed out to the hotel. It wasen't very long after getting in that I had my bags unpacked and sorted around the room and we were off to the church to meet Benjamin. The kids love it there and the language barrier never seems to hold them back. It was great to see all those smiling faces from last year and even a new arrival whose mom was pregnant with her during my last trip. I feel very welcome there and they are now like extended family to me and my family!!

The kids joined in on the night service at the church. Little Abraham is on the left and he's even more handsome than last year!!!

A SNEAK PEAK OF THE FIRST DISTRIBUTION DAY

Arianna had so much fun playing with the kids!! I think she felt very welcomed here.

The villagers helping to unload the food bags for distribution.

A shot of the kids at the village yesterday.

Arianna wanted to play the game to so the clown let her. Too bad she doesn't know how to play simon says in spanish!! LOL!!

It was so good to even see the women of the villages smile and having a good time!

This lady was thrilled with the bananas she received and was even more excited when she realized she would also get a food bag.

The women of this village gave me a beautiful hand woven placemat for coming to the village
with donations.

Lee Jr. helping to fill the food baskets for San Andres, New Hope Ministries.

The 56 food bags for the families in Los Robles. They include beans, rice, maize, canned meat, carrots, potatoes, rice, onions, pineapple and bananas. This will make such a difference in the lives of those who receive them.

The government building that was burned in Solola last week.

All of us in the get away truck. We took this truck through a finca to be able to take a boat out of the village.

This asthma medication was so welcomed at the medical clinic today.

600+CHILDREN+TOYS+CAKE+SHOES+FOOD=HAPPINESS

We had a remarkable time in the village today as we watched at least 600 children and their families receive blessings of food, toys, shoes and cake. The children performed several traditional dances as a thank you to us for coming and they were so adorable!! I was amazed at the way Arianna reacted to all of those children as well. She went and sat in the middle of those children and let´s just say a language barrier did nothing to hemper her from enjoying each of them!! It was so wonderful for me to watch her play and enjoy herself!! It was also so remarkable to look around and see her in the eyes of those around her. I am so blessed that God choose us to adopt Arianna and provide us the chance to return to Guatemala and let her help the people of her country!!

We did have a rather interesting dearture though. Someone telephoned Sharon talking about road closures due to an angry mob being formed in Panajachel closing roads down. Apparently the law enforcement here has been doing little to nothing about the people who are stealing and extorting money so villagers have decided to take matters into their own hands. One man and three woman were caught extorting money and the villagers seized the man and beat him to death, while also setting him on fire and when the police would not release the three women to them they formed a very angry mob. They threatened to burn the police station down and more if they were not released!! Once they were turned over they knelt them in the middle of the street as the women begged for their lives and another chance. One sadly was pregnant. They paraded these women down the streets and beat them along the way until the police stopped them at the waterfall and gained custody of them again. Thankfully they showed up just in time to spare their lives!! Such a sad tragedy here.

We had to stop and speak to villagers to remove large rocks from the road so we could pass and thank God they did do so!! We thoought we were free and clear but ran into another road block as the villagers cut HUGE trees and laid them across the road preventing anyone from passing. We went to San Jorge and dropped the donations off at the preschool. Julio phoned in for a boat to come get us so we could return to Panajachel. After a nice boat ride and a cold shower from the waves we arrived in Panajachel. We were shortly greeted by several police trucks with police dressed in raid gear while carrying tear gas canisters!! Gloria immediately took us into the court yard of a family while they phoned a reliable tuk tuk driver to come get us. We made it safely to the hotel but it was quite the adventure!!

I have learned several things today that I did not know. Some things I had an idea about became apparent. I know for sure now a very reliable mission team will need to be formed for next year. I also learned that many people in the world are not as they seem!! I also came to the conclusion that one can only look the other way for so long before it becomes too much!! I´m praying that God will send me someone reliable who has a true passion for helping the people of Guatemala to help me run the mission next year. If you´re flexable and would be interested in helping with collecting donations and shipping them out, fundraising for food bags, traveling to Guatemala to help distribute the items, and having an experience of a life time this is your opportunity!! This mission continues to grow each year and more people will be needed to travel so if you´re interested please email me or leave a comment with your email addy and I´ll be sure to send along the information. I will have the dates of the next year´s Project Santa posted soon. So start saving now and come along for a journey of a life time!!

Internet has been so SLOW and sporatic here that I have not been able to post photos but I will do it as soon as I can!! Thanks again for all of your support and please for my family as we continue on with the rest of the mission trip!!

5,000 POUNDS OF FOOD

Can you imagine the look of surprise on a mother´s face, who had taken her four small children to work in the market with her when she´s approached by an American woman asking to buy out several different kinds of vegetables and fruits. This is what happened today as we were able to buy 5,000 pounds of food from various women in the market with children. The look on their faces was absolutely priceless!! Almost all of those food items were packed into bags to be distributed and I can´t wait to see the smiles on the faces when they´re handed out!! So many people will be touched by these food baskets thanks to many very generous donors!! Thanks to each of you for your support!!
